Dawn at a Sumo Stable — Morning Keiko

About this experience
Morning training — keiko — starts at 6 am and it's the only time you'll ever see sumo as it actually is: raw, methodical, and nothing like television. I have a standing arrangement with a stable near Ryogoku where my father trained. We arrive before sunrise, watch from the edge of the dohyo, and I explain what's actually happening — the drills, the hierarchy, the silences. Afterwards, chanko nabe breakfast with whoever's around. Most mornings that includes a former rikishi who now runs the kitchen.
